The attempt to locate the Australian leg of the World Rally in the Northern Rivers Region, racing through National Parks and on public roads through rural residential areas, against the wishes of local residents, has been met with determined protest and activism to disrupt the event and to recast the event as incompatible with ideas of environmentalism and sustainability.

The actions of the local residents were successful in disrupting the inaugural event, stopping day 2 of the event, gaining international media coverage of the protest and actions, and turning the opinions of visitors, drivers and sponsors against the continuation of the event in the Northern Rivers Region.
